RUC researcher presents ongoing DIS-TRUST research at EASST-4S Conference in Amsterdam

Micol Mieli, postdoc at DIS-TRUST, attended the 11th EASST-4S Conference in Amsterdam last July. Micol's presentation "Developing a postphenomenological methodology to investigate trust relations on digital platforms" proposed a postphenomenological framework to situate the lived experiences of platform users in the broader, more complex context of the technologies in which they are embedded.

    On July 16th-19th,  2024, Micol Mieli, postdoc in the DIS-TRUST project, attended the 11th EASST-4S Conference hosted by the the Athena Institute at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Organized jointly by the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST) and the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), the conference focused on the theme of making and doing transformations. 

    Micol Mieli presented her latest research titled "Developing a postphenomenological methodology to investigate trust relations on digital platforms”. Her presentation focused on the development of an epistemological framework to situate the lived experiences of platform users in the broader, more complex context of the technologies in which they are embedded. Micol shared her proposal for a merged methodology that encompasses different methods to highlight both very concrete and very abstract aspects of the experience of trust online. The talk was well received, especially among the post-phenomenological scholars.

    In the same panel, titled Transforming methods for digital research, DIS-TRUST board member Prof. Annette Markham (Utrecht University) and her colleague Andrea Schaffar (University of Salzburg; University of Applied Arts Vienna) also presented their ongoing work on the project TRAVIS (Trust And Visuality - Everyday digital practices). The project has many parallels with the DIS-TRUST project and confirms the importance of collaborating across universities and disciplines. 

    The quadriennal joint event is a precious occasion for STS scholars worldwide to come together and discussing how to tackle complex societal challenges through the study of science and technology. Over 3000 attendees participated in over 400 panels, presentations, making & doing contributions, and other events that explored the role of STS in making and doing contributions to transformations in an era of grand societal challenges. This was a wonderful opportunity for Micol Mieli to bring the ideas and work in progress from the DIS-TRUST project to a wider audience, open up her ideas to interesting discussions, listen to many inspiring talks and connect with colleagues from all over the world.
