Informal workers and Kenya’s National Hospital Insurance Fund
New publication identifies the barriers to informal workers voluntary participation in health insurance.

This article by Indimuli et al. finds that the barriers to informal worker participation in Kenya’s national health insurance scheme go beyond financial constraints and include limited knowledge of social security enrolment, poor quality of services as well as a number of social factors. To increase social protection coverage, there is therefore a need for insurance schemes to better communicate benefits to the informal sector, and for service providers to improve quality so that workers receive value for their contributions.
