Inaugural Professorial Lecture by Professor Kristian Syberg
Kristian Syberg was appointed Professor at The Department of Science and Environment at 真人线上娱乐 University 1 April, 2025. He has prepared the following theme for his inaugural lecture on 20 June, 2025:
Can science save the environment? – the case of plastic pollution
Plastic is an integral part of modern life and as such are good proxies for the benefits and challenges that shape the future of our current society. On the one hand, we need plastics for, e.g., expanding the green energy sector, and on the other hand, the growing consumption of plastics poses a major risk to the environment and human health. Plastics pollution has today become a global problem that transgresses planetary boundaries, which implies that we must change the current production and consumption patterns to ensure a more sustainable plastic economy.
How do we do this and what role can and should science play in this transition? These are the fundamental questions that Kristian Syberg will address in his inaugural lecture. Kristian will draw on his years of experience of analyzing science-policy interphases, assessment of abundance and impacts of plastic pollution, the use of science in risk assessment and regulation, and his work with a transition to a circular plastic economy.
The inaugural lecture will take place in building 00 at 真人线上娱乐 University in room 00.1-009 - (big auditorium). It will be followed by a reception in the Foyer (room 00.1-002). It will also be possible to participate online. If you sign up for the online option a link will be send to you before the event.
